Messing Around - 10" Superstar Tom
Переглядів 1,5 тис.3 роки тому
Just messing around. Managed to find an 8"x10" Superstar tom in Super Mahogany finish, which is somewhat of a unicorn to find for sale. This one is from the mid-80's and the bearing edge is cut after the lacquer job, as opposed to before the finish was applied like on all my other Superstar drums. Luckily, it still fits with the rest of the kit seamlessly. I love the melodic character of a 10" ...

They sound superb. Never should have sold my Superstars. Awesome playing too.
I just had a savage 14x8 5mm with bell brass hooos arrive today. Incredible. Weighs a bit. 13kg. If it falls off the stand it’ll damage the floor in must pubs.
Single mics sound way better on this one
This kit sounds phenomenal!
Hey Dennis, what heads are on the drum? It sounds fantastic!
Thanks! Evans coated G2’s on the toms, frosted EQ4 on the kick. Power Center Reverse Dot on the snare.
They really sound great man
Damn Snare sounds dope
Hey ! What was the name of the last speaker use for subkick ? Thanks !

@@DennisLeeflang I saw they were your own products, that’s cool! I would like to know if you have a reverb store? or if you deliver to Europe (France) ? Thank you !
I don’t sell these on reverb but I’m happy to ship to France. Just email me through my website.
@@DennisLeeflang Okok that's super cool, thanks a lot !
great recording!! nice tuning of kick and snare especially.
These sound amazing 🔥🔥🔥 any tuning tips for your sound? I’ve noted the head choice 😉🔥🙏
Thanks! Tuning videos are on my channel.
@@DennisLeeflang great that’s mega. I’ll have a look!
Man the finish is beautiful! Do you think thats the closest colour in the Gretsch catalog at the moment to The Superstars Super Mahogany?
No not at all. I have both. The Superstars are more orange-brown and the Gretsch kit is more of a deep red-ish purple.
Wood or nylon tips ???
That was a Vic Firth 55A (or maybe a 5B) wood tip.
My 6 month lead time started last month for my Savage custom 3mm 14 X 6.5 with heavy* cast bronze hoops. Can`t Wait! But I have to lol.
That 18” is gutsy. Fantastic soundting kit
I got a 1960s Pearl Challenger which is a made in Japan stencil kit and that thing sounds really sweet, those Mahogany shells are super deep. The 20in Kick and 14 floor sound pretty massive as well as the 12, I have a 13in as well but i haven't tried it yet.
That sounds nice, and that SLP Maple 👌. I need to look into that SLP because I don't have a Maple snare
Love vintage drums, especially the finish on that kit. Tasty playing too.
Really great demo of these fine Paiste hi-hats. Thank you!
Ive got the same sizes as you too!
I love my USA.
I,ve never been a paiste fan.., but now listening to these rides .😊
Sounds great!
Love this kit!!!
What is the inside mic?
sE Electronics V-Kick
I just started learning how to play. I'm so excited to get somewhat good at playing but the struggle is real!
My thoughts, 3 years later…. 1. The Tama has some overtones that are less desirable in a recording situation. You will always have to add some sort of muffling, however little. The Savages have the same amount of overtones but none of the less musical ones so in certain situations the drums can totally work when left wide open which the Tama can’t really get away with. This is all more subtle than this explanation sounds, but when working with these drums daily, it becomes pretty clear. 2. The 3mm and 5mm Savages sound extremely similar in mid to high tunings. However, the 5mm is amazing for lower tunings. The overtones don’t get nasty or sloppy. The drum sounds huge and balanced when tuned low. The Tama and the 3mm Savage become pretty unwieldy at very low tunings. 3. The Savages have a slightly fatter attack than the Tama (when hitting just the head, not a rim shot). Overall, the differences are subtle and I can imagine that a Tama that was produced a month later could sound identical to the 3mm Savage. The shells are sand cast which is not a super consistent way of making shells and each shell is going to have somewhat of its own personality. All picky details aside, the Savages totally nail the original Tama sound and vibe, with perhaps some minor improvements. It also has to be noted that the oversized snare wires and roller system are a big part of the sound. The bottom head is much less dampened than with traditional throwoff and wires, which definitely plays a part in making these drums sound big and just… different than anything else.
Wow! That was great, those USA Customs sound amazing, and the cymbals, how WOW! What are you using on this recording?! Amazing! 👍
Thanks! What cymbals, you mean? All Paiste: 14” Dimensions Power Hi-Hat 19” Signature Full Crash 24” Masters Deep Ride 20” Signature Full Crash 20” 2002 Novo China
Was savage's supply of shells/rims coming from deluth (who have cessed production) if you go to their website everything is out of stock?
Not really my place to give away proprietary information on Savage’s behalf but I can tell you that Savage is still making bell brass snare drums with the same shells :)
Price difference alone makes it an easy sell for the Capi but I notice the kick's tuning is different.. I'd love to hear more examples on more sources :)
Tuning is identical. Broken-in head, samples recorded a minute apart. It’s just very noticeable how the VP25 adds more harmonics in the lows, which makes you perceive it as the drum being tuned slightly differently, while it’s not. I’ve since sold the 312A’s and bought/built 4 more VP25’s so no more comparisons possible :)
Thanks for the info and update! I don't get the 312.. They sound closer to a Neve than an API to me.. @@DennisLeeflang
Tama was first.
awesome sound!!! lovit!!
Sounds so good. Would you ever consider getting the bearing edges redone? Or are the original edge too precious?
If it ain’t broke… The edges are in perfect shape and a big part of the sound.
Different hi-hat stands have different sounds
Imo the relative mic position is of greater impact to the percieved sound than a typ of the stand, and then there is a big difference in production years thus influencing how long the cymbals being played, slight variations in their weight, are they both of the same shape ie. regular/sound edge as pointed out by others here
My dream drum kit!
It's the Rosie for me! All of them sound great, HUGE Paiste fan!
The kick drums are the best I’ve ever in my life. I have a 24” in the super maple finish. It’s just nuts.

TAMA BLOWS DOORS 4 SURE
Are you still using the spinal glide AHEAD throne?
Absolutely. I have two. One in my studio and one for my live setup. I don't do a session or show without them and if one were to ever wear out, I'll get a new one immediately.
Thanks about to get one 2! (3..4)@@DennisLeeflang
Just got mine and only problem with it is that even though I tighted the base as much possible, it still rotates a bit.. did you have this problem also and if so how did you solve it? thanks again@@DennisLeeflang
@@CloseUpLoverI’m not sure how that’s possible. Mine lock solid. Make sure you tighten both the wing nuts on the bottom of the top and on the base. Make sure you balance the long nut on the opposite side of the wing nut on the top.
Sounds wonderful. Nice kit
Gosh they should amazing
Neils kit on Moving pictures amongst others
I've seen Rick Beato recording toms with those Y-Cable, It's definitely fuller but I'm not sure if it will really help EQ'ed in a mix with many instruments. Snare top + bottom on a single input can help to fit a 8 channels preamp limitation (BD, 2xSD, TOM1, TOM2, TOM3, OH1, OH2). Thanks for the video Dennis!
I do a lot of projects where I record the drums and also do the mix, and it definitely makes a huge difference. The tone/note of the tom is a lot more defined and more of it sticks through a dense mix, whereas a top mic only can result in the tone being eaten away and just the stick attack remaining. You also have a lot less cymbal bleed in the tom tracks because about 40% of the blend is the bottom mic (the way a 421 and 57 interact on a Y cable results in about a 60/40 blend).
@@DennisLeeflang oh okay that's good to know, I thought they would be equal level between top and bottom but with different mic output levels this way you definitely will get less bleed. It has only benefits from what I can see. Thanks for your advice Dennis!
@@DynamicRockers My pleasure! It’s not so much the output level, but rather the output impedance which, simplified, means how much the preamp is pushing back against the mic. The 421/57 combo is classic for this purpose because of how their impedance properties interact with each other and a preamp. You may not get great results with other mics. Not because other mics wouldn’t be great by themselves, but just because of their impedance.
I am about to buy one of these Apollo kits with the same lug style...does that mean it is Revelle? It was hard finding information on these kits and the different styles. Happy I came across this video, great playing and sound. I think these kits are incredible.
Thanks! The brand names mean very little. Music stores were able to make up their own brand name and have the manufacturer slap that name on the badges and the store could choose wrap colors and lugs. It’s kind of an odd concept today since these were essentially custom budget kits, which are two things that wouldn’t go hand in hand these days. Although the shells couldn’t be customized. Anyway, my kit is a pre-Tama Hoshino kit. I have a Superstar kit from 1980 and the shell construction is 100% identical and clearly the same manufacturer, though built 15-20 years apart. Just different wood (Superstar is birch, Revelle is mahogany). Same 5-ply cross-laminated construction with diagonal seams. There were at least two manufacturers making these “stencil” kits. One would become Tama and one would become Pearl. The company that would become Pearl used very different shells. They were made of much cheaper, lighter wood (Luan, which is also a species of mahogany but much less dense and lighter in color) and the shells often had reinforcement rings.
@@DennisLeeflang That's rad, thanks for the info. I had no idea about the history of the drums, was initially just drawn to the design. Does this kit have re-rings?
@marccrossland785 My kit has no re-rings. They’re 6-ply 9mm straight (thick) shells. Again, identical to the 80’s Tama Superstar shells, except mahogany instead of birch.
Tuned to perfection
Good job with tuning it.Sounds killer.Excellent drum set.
